For some of us, October is the month to fill up your sweet jars, prepare your trick or treat bags and dust off last year’s old clown masks. It’s one month a year where things can tend to get a little creepy, yet somehow we welcome it back and always prepare for it.
But in today’s digital age where technology intrinsically intertwined with our daily lives, the spookiest thing of all is something we can’t always see, and is happening every 39 seconds according to the University of Maryland, who is one of the first to quantify the near-constant rate of cyber attacks of computers with Internet access— every 39 seconds on average.
Unlike Halloween, these harrowing events are a lot harder to prepare for and a lot less welcomed – but prepare, you absolutely should.
According to Nexusguard’s Threat Report, large-scale DDoS attacks increased in size by 500% in 2018. Cybersecurity Ventures estimates that cybercrime damages will cost the world $6 trillion yearly by 2021. And it also doesn’t help that hacking tool kits and software are available on the dark web for as low as $1. In other words, as cyber crime becomes that much more intelligent and prevalent, we are all susceptible to the most spine-chilling cyber attacks out there – whether you like 'halloween' or not.
Thankfully, every October, there are meaningful campaigns such as European Cyber Security Month (ECSM), National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) in the United States to educate people on how to protect themselves against cyber threats and promote cyber resilience. This year, NCSAM will focus on personal responsibility and emphasise the importance of taking proactive and preventative measures to heighten and strengthen the reliability, usability and integrity of their network, both at home and at work with the theme - Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT.
In line with the Cyber Security Awareness month, Alyne would also like to do our part in increasing cyber awareness by extending our resources to ensure that you are up-to-date with best practices and aren't leaving your door wide open for cyber trick-or-treaters.
